Stilleben - Die grosse Zeit des europäischen Stillebens (German)
Published by Belser - 1979
Hardcover with Linen Slipcase
This very large and important first edition, 35cm x 41cm (14’”x 16”), printed in German, is a truly illuminating history of all areas of Still Life painting throughout Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
It is extremely well documented with text, but also with photographic images of the highest quality. These appear as colour with the text and black and white with the index. The special treat at the end of the book is a fine selection of many paintings, beautifully reproduced, as pull out triple page spreads in colour. These are really superb and would be exciting pages to have just as a book on its own.
This book covers all the Still Life subjects of flower, fruits, vegetables, fish, fowl, game, tableware, glassware, objects de vertu and garden ware. These are all shown with clarity and intense colour and are a real joy to look at.
The book is a masterpiece in its own right.
